Conducting three consultative referendums on Sunday, May 9, 2024 – explanations

We provide some general explanations regarding the implementation of three consultative referendums (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 35/2024).

The vote will take place on Sunday, June 9, 2024, simultaneously with the elections of the members of the Republic of Slovenia to the European Parliament.

The polling station will also be organized at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Brussels at Rue Joseph II 14, 1000 Brussels.

CONSULTATIVE REFERENDUMS:

  • on the regulation of the right to assistance in voluntary termination of life,
  • on the introduction of preferential voting for elections to the National Assembly,
  • on the cultivation and processing of cannabis for medical purposes and the cultivation and possession of cannabis for limited personal use.

VOTING METHODS:

a) HOMELESS:

Voters with permanent residence in Slovenia who will be abroad on voting day (non-residents) will have to vote by mail from abroad or at a diplomatic or consular mission with an established polling station no later than by May 24, 2024, 24:00 Slovenian time, submit an application to the National Electoral Commission for another method of voting in referendums.

!!! All voters with permanent residence in Slovenia (non-residents) who have already submitted an application to vote in the European elections by post from abroad will receive a postal shipment with election materials also for consultative referendums and will not need to submit a new application.
Voters who have already announced that they will vote in the European elections at representative offices abroad will also not need to submit new applications.

b) Emigrants:

Voters with permanent residence abroad (emigrants) who cannot attend the vote at a diplomatic mission or consulate, or who do not have a mission with an established polling station in their country of permanent residence, will be able to vote by mail from abroad, if the application for voting by mail from abroad is submitted to the National Electoral Commission no later than May 24, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. Slovenian time.

Unlike the elections of members of the Republic of Slovenia to the European Parliament, voting cards for voters permanently residing abroad, They will not be issued ex officio. The voter must explicitly request this method of voting.

c) OMNIA

Voters with permanent residence abroad (emigrants) who will be in the Republic of Slovenia on voting day may vote at a special polling station at the headquarters of the district electoral commission (at the so-called "omnia" polling station), if they notify the State Electoral Commission of this no later than 5 June 2024 at 24:00 Slovenian time.
